Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Utilize a systematic approach to identify actual and/or potential drug-related problems with therapy.
  2. Formulate patient specific recommendation and monitoring plan.
  3. Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, nurses, physicians and other health care professionals, especially in handling difficult situations.

Target Participants

This course is designed for the practicing pharmacists who are interested in fine-tuning their fundamental skills in providing drug regimen review and resolving drug related problems.

Entry requirement

Applicants should possess
A Bachelor degree in pharmacy or higher and be a registered pharmacist in his/her country of residence.

Course content
1. Drug therapy assessment
  • Principles of pharmaceutical care and common drug-related problems
  • Data collection and use of medical chart
2.Interpretation of clinical laboratory data and diagnostic tests
  • Common causes of abnormal laboratory values
  • Interpret the clinical significance of abnormal laboratory values
  • Diagnostic and imaging results interpretation
  • Terminologies / jargons commonly used by healthcare professionals
3.Physical assessment
  • Vital signs
  • Key assessment parameters for major disease states
4.Case discussion and presentation

Clinical Case Workup (100%)
 

Graduation Requirement

Students must fulfil all of the following criteria to be granted a Certificate of Completion:
  • 75% attendance
  • A passing grade (50%) on the overall assessment
For students who did not achieve a 75% attendance OR not passing the written examination, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued.

Candidates who have been successfully granted a Certificate of Completion for this course and PHAR 5732 Certificate Course in Clinical Pharmacy Skills: Drug Information and Literature Evaluation will be eligible for a waiver to the course PHAR 5880 Drug Therapy Assessment and Drug information should they decide to pursue the Master of Clinical Pharmacy Programme organized by the School of Pharmacy, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the future. The waiver is valid for 5 academic years subsequent to the candidate's completion of PHAR5732 & PHAR5733, whichever comes earlier.
 

Teaching Staff

The course will be administered by the School of Pharmacy. Students will learn from teachers of the School of Pharmacy, as well as expert physicians & pharmacists from local practice settings.
 

Language

English will be used as the main language of instruction.
