Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Efficiently retrieve, evaluate and communicate information for medical & drug information enquiries.
  2. Interpret biomedical literature with regard to study design and methodology, significance of reported data and conclusions.
  3. Appraise and apply relevant medical and drug information to patient care and therapy assessment.

Target Participants

This course is designed for the practicing pharmacists who are interested in fine-tuning their fundamental skills in literature evaluation and providing drug information.

Entry requirement

Applicants should possess
A Bachelor degree in pharmacy or higher and be a registered pharmacist in his/her country of residence.

Drug information and drug literature evaluation

a) Literature evaluation skills
  • Study objective and outcomes
  • Methodology assessment: setting, patient recruitment, intervention and monitoring, etc
  • Results interpretation: confidence interval, point estimates, etc
  • Internal and external validity
b) Drug information skills
  • Primary, secondary, and tertiary references & search strategies
  • Steps in problem solving and documentation
  • Electronic database and platform for information
  • Formulary management and practicing drug information in hospital

c) Application of evidence-based medicine by clinicians

Discussion / Journal critique assignment (Journal Club)

Assessment

Journal club (60%)

Graduation Requirement

Students must fulfil all of the following criteria to be granted a Certificate of Completion:
  • 75% attendance
  • A passing grade (50%) on the overall assessment
For students who did not achieve a 75% attendance OR not passing the written examination, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued.

Candidates who have been successfully granted a Certificate of Completion for this course and PHAR5733 Certificate Course in Clinical Pharmacy Skills: Drug Therapy & Patient Assessment will be eligible for a waiver to the course PHAR 5880 Drug Therapy Assessment and Drug information should they decide to pursue the Master of Clinical Pharmacy Programme organized by the School of Pharmacy, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the future. The waiver is valid for 5 academic years subsequent to the candidate's completion of PHAR5732 & PHAR5733, whichever comes earlier.
 

Teaching Staff

The course will be administered by the School of Pharmacy. Students will learn from teachers of the School of Pharmacy, as well as expert physicians & pharmacists from local practice settings.
 

Language

English will be used as the main language of instruction.
