Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Differentiate different study designs and understand their pros and cons.
  2. Appreciate the essential elements of conducting a practice-based project and the common difficulties encountered.
  3. Interpret biomedical literature with regard to study design and statistical analysis.
  4. Develop a research proposal that aims to generate clinical, economic, humanistic or translational knowledge applicable to patient care.

Target Participants

This course is designed for the practicing pharmacists who are interested in fine-tuning their fundamental skills in conducting practice-based pharmacy service evaluation or research.

Entry requirement

Applicants should possess
A Bachelor degree in pharmacy or higher and be a registered pharmacist in his/her country of residence.

Overview of research methodology and planning of pharmaceutical care project
  • Features of various study designs and bias
  • Identify a need for service and communication
  • Formulating a research question for pharmacy practice-based projects
  • Designing a project and ethics approval
  • Service examples in the US
Basic biostatistics
  • Types of parameters and data
  • Sample size estimation
  • Common statistical tests for pharmacy-service related outcomes
  • Use of statistical software
Project idea discussion and presentation

Assessment

Project Idea Presentation (50%)

Graduation Requirement

Students must fulfil all of the following criteria to be granted a Certificate of Completion:
  • 75% attendance
  • A passing grade (50%) on the overall assessment
For students who did not achieve a 75% attendance OR not passing the written examination, a Certificate of Attendance will be issued.

Candidates who have been successfully granted a Certificate of Completion for this course will be eligible for a waiver to the course PHAR5824 Graduation Project I should they decide to pursue the Master of Clinical Pharmacy Programme organized by the School of Pharmacy, the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the future. The waiver is valid for 5 academic years subsequent to the candidate's completion of PHAR5731.
 

Teaching Staff

The course will be administered by the School of Pharmacy. Students will learn from teachers of the School of Pharmacy, as well as expert physicians & pharmacists from local practice settings.
 

Language

English will be used as the main language of instruction.
