Pharmacy exchange program at University of Southern California (USC), USA

On June 7 2004, the first and historical visit had been made for the students from our school to the USC. The objectives of the program are 1) to establish collaboration between the 2 schools; 2) to exchange ideas and experiences in community and hospital pharmacy practice between US and Hong Kong; 3) to learn and compare the pharmacy systems; and 4) to broaden the horizon of participating students with international exposure

This exchange program is a 2-week program for students who have completed Year 2 undergraduate pharmacy training at CUHK. The activities of the program include lectures, case discussions, and clinical attachments in hospital, ambulatory and community pharmacies. Students who had participated in this program found that it was a valuable and memorable experience.

USC International Pharmacy Clerkship in Hong Kong

Since year 2004, the School of Pharmacy hosted a 6-week clerkship program annually for the Pharmacy undergraduates from University of Southern California (USC). The main focus of the clerkship is on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Each year, around two to four exchange students come for their clerkship during the fall semester. The clerkship included lectures on TCM, and various visits to hospital Chinese medicine clinics, manufacturer of TCM products, herbal market, as well as community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy.

One of the highlight of our exchange program with USC is a special evening social gathering. The gathering included presentations given by CUHK students regarding their visits to USC in the summer, followed by the USC students’ presentations on their student life, pharmacy curriculum and professional practice in the USA.

Exchange Programme Scholarship

Eligibility
- B Pharm Year 2 (JUPAS)/Year 3 (EAS) students in the academic year of exchange
- Academic Performance: Overall cumulative GPA > 3.25

Funding scheme
- Return economy ticket for the exchange trip plus associated fees
- For USC exchange programme: not more than 10% of the class
- For London U exchange programme: not more than 2 students/year

Applicant should submit:
- Statement for the objectives of participation in the exchange programme (maximum one A4 page)
- Brief CV including honors & prizes obtained in university; extra-curricular activities that you have participated in the University (maximum two A4 pages)

Interview: To evaluate student’s suitability and communication skills,
- Individual interview
- Interview panel: at least two SOP professors
- Interview language: English

The awardees are expected to
- Serve as an ambassador for the future exchange programme
- Provide a detailed written report for the exchange trip (maximum three A4 pages)

Students who was granted scholarship to visit University of London / University of Southern California.

Guidelines for reimbursement

Participants please provide the followings:

A details expenses report with
- Student full name
- Student ID
- Contact telephone
- Bank account & name
- List of items ** and amount to be reimbursed
Original Receipt for all items**
Boarding pass of air ticket. If the original receipt is missing or cannot be provided, you should submit any relevant document such as invoice, copies, etc.
Written report of the exchange programme.
